Compositional Work

Throughout my education, I have worked on composition projects. I first started with vocal compositions and arrangements and then grew into pieces for instrumental trios and quartets. Most recently I composed two SSATB peices for my master's thesis in 2024. Below you will find a select group of my work.

Master's Thesis

For my MPhil thesis, I composed two site-specific SSATB vocal compositions entitled Together in the Bright and Find the Light. These compositions used the resonant frequencies of two churches to inform the pitches and dynamics used. Below there are recordings of each piece with scrolling sheet music. The audio is binaural so it is best listened to with headphones.

change

This piece, entitled change, was written as part of the Contemporary Composition II course in my master's program. The goal was to create a piece for cello, French horn, flute, and prerecorded or live electronics. The electronics used are a recording of wind sounds I took and altered with granular synthesis. This composition potrays losing oneself in the noise. The themes are introduced and then torn apart with the entrance of wind noise. During this section, the cello must harmonize with the wind using artificial harmonics.

The piece was very roughly recorded in a workshop at the end of the semester. The sheet music can be found to the right and the workshop recording can be found below.

Vermont

Vermont is a piece I wrote while attending the Wildflower Composers Camp at Temple University between highschool and college. The piece was composed for cello, flute, and prepared piano. This piece is built from the different sounds I heard during a hike in Vermont. The piece opens with footsteps created by the cello as the listener approaches the birds. Then enters a conversation between the songbird (the flute), birds chirping (piano), woodpeckers (piano), and a more aggressive mournful bird (cello). At the end, the listener walks away as the birds gradually return into silence.

PG Tour Hymn

During my time in Pennslyvania Girlchoir in highschool, I composed a tour hymn for the group to sing as we traveled to different countries. Our brother choir, the Keystone State Boychoir, had one of their own therefore this was created as our version of that song. The lyrics were created through talking with other members and choosing exactly what best represented us. I then composed a melody and harmonized in for SSAA voices. The sheet music can be found to the right.
